Keep Fido Safe: Microbiological Testing for Pet Food

Ask any animal lover and they’ll tell you their pets are family. The 170 million pampered dogs and cats in the U.S alone that add to the annual $22 million pet food industry; which is expected to double in earnings within the next few years. People simply want to give their pets the very best lives possible, from food to fashion. The unexpected loss of a beloved pet due to bacteria-laced food is an unnecessary emotional hit to any family; which is why microbiological testing is so important to the health and happiness of your furry family members.
But what exactly is microbiological testing? Microbial tests confirm the presence of microorganisms including viruses, fungi, airborne and environmental bacteria, and hidden pathogens not found through other testing procedures. While salmonella testing is essential to avoiding pet health problems and premature deaths, the other microorganisms can easily affect not only the health of Fido, but of you as well.

If you watch the news or read a paper, you’re likely aware that each year it seems as though a new major bacterial outbreak occurs in pre-packaged pet food or raw food diet plans. Thousands of animals suffer due to these unnecessary toxins. While testing does occur regularly with most brands, they’re often performed simply to notice pathogens such as salmonella. While that’s beneficial, those results do not make any mentions of indicator organisms such as airborne bacteria; other environmental contaminants caused by spoilage;
yeast and mold; and coliform bacteria like e.coli; the latter of which is often a result of fecal contamination.

You might be shocked at the amount of fecal matter that winds up in pet food sources. Most basic testing forms don’t recognize the bacteria formed from the excess waste. But the rapid testing systems utilizing microbiological quality assurance procedures can. In the event of this type of testing, pharmaceutical microbiology – a branch of microbiology that deals specifically with medications and the toxins, and strains of bacteria, in water and other base materials – becomes involved.

All non-food contact surfaces are sterilized and moisture controlled. The labs themselves are completely free of all contaminants, as are all growth mediums. Swab testing is performed to determine the amounts (if any) of bacteria within the food source. The sample swabs are dipped and broken off into vials of bacteria-laced broth, depending on the original testing concerns, and incubated for 18-24 hours. Once the broth has been stored for an entire day, a color change of the vial material verifies the results. Confirmation is then performed
utilizing microbiology instruments specific to the required follow-up testing procedures.

These rapid detection procedures are simple, viable solutions that are all too often ignored by mass-produced pet food companies in the race to earn an almighty dollar. But the only ones who pay for their arrogance are you and your fuzzy family members.
Microbiological testing can assure your pet continues to live a long and healthy life by removing the dangers you can’t see. Your perfect love story deserves a happy ending. Always make sure your pet’s food has gone through microbiological testing, or take the extra step and send it to a lab yourself.
